What is a UFI code and how do I create one?
Direct answer: The UFI is a 16-character code (for example F38D-EJQS-830Y-41C8) that links a product on the market to its poison centre notification. You generate it for free in ECHA's UFI generator using your VAT number and an internal formulation number, print it on the label preceded by "UFI:", and include it in the notification.
How to generate one
- Go to ECHA's UFI generator.
- Enter your company's VAT number (or the company key you receive if you have no VAT number).
- Enter a formulation number of your choice (an integer; keep a register of which number belongs to which formulation).
- Copy the 16-character result. Keep the pairing VAT + formulation number + UFI in your records.
Where it goes
On the label, close to the other label elements, preceded by "UFI:". For small packaging it may go on the outer packaging. For industrial-use products it may be in section 1.1 of the SDS instead of the label.
One formulation, one UFI
The UFI identifies a composition, not a product name. Two products with the same formulation can share a UFI; the same product with a changed formulation needs a new one. Every hazardous mixture on the EU market must now carry a UFI, including products placed before 2025.
Common mistakes
- Hidden characters when pasting the UFI into the notification (a frequent cause of failed submissions)
- Generating a new UFI for a trade-name change (not needed; that is an update)
- Forgetting the UFI on the label while the notification is on file (inspectors check the label first)
