Which languages does each EU country require?
Direct answer: Each member state decides which languages it accepts for the free-text parts of a notification. Most require their official language; some also accept English. Notifying in English alone is only compliant in the countries that have said so. ECHA publishes the current list in the "Overview of Member States decisions on implementing Annex VIII".
What needs translating
Only the free-text fields: mainly the toxicological information (SDS section 11) and any remarks. Classification, composition, packaging and product category are coded values and do not need translation.
Why this trips people up
A company selling in Sweden, Finland and Germany that notifies in Swedish and English is non-compliant in Finland (Finnish or Swedish required) and Germany (German required). The notification goes through — the portal does not check language content — but the appointed body can reject it later and an inspection will flag it.
How to handle it
- List every country where the product is placed on the market.
- Look up each country's accepted languages in ECHA's overview.
- Provide the free text in each required language inside the same dossier (the format supports multiple languages per field).
- Keep the source language as the version of record and have translations reviewed by someone who can read them.
PCN Ready derives the languages from your selected countries and generates the translations for review.
